As I listen to a patient鈥檚 story, I am reminded of the decades of learning through life experiences that came before. These lived experiences are what make a patient unique. As a former educator, I see the synergy between medicine and education. Time and the sharing of information, is fundamental to trust and to providing meaningful care to patients. One must never underestimate a patient鈥檚 interest or ability to learn about a disease process they are working hard to overcome both physiologically and psychologically. I admire how patients arm themselves with knowledge as they prepare to do battle. Their eagerness to understand is palpable. Knowledge empowers them to choose what鈥檚 best for themselves and for their family. On days I鈥檓 not working I share time with those closest, noticing all that surrounds us through biking, kayaking, hiking, travel and learning.
