The AOA体育平台 Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency program delivers high-caliber, customized learning experiences to the pharmacy resident. Our program builds off the fundamentals of doctorate of pharmacy education and the PGY1 pharmacy residency to provide advanced training in the ambulatory care setting. Our goal is to prepare the resident for their future career as a well-rounded, knowledgeable and compassionate ambulatory care pharmacist.
As both a tertiary care referral center and community hospital with a strong outpatient practice presence, MHMMC has a truly diverse patient population. Portland is home to a sizeable international community, including a large immigrant population due to Portland's refugee resettlement resources, with over 50 languages spoken locally. Residents鈥� learning experiences will offer the opportunity to experience and treat a wide range of disease states including, but not limited to primary care, anticoagulation, transitions of care, virology, oncology and transplantation. Our PGY2 ambulatory care resident also has the opportunity to learn from and serve our patients who are experiencing homelessness through the AOA体育平台 Preble Street Learning Collaborative.
Our small residency size fosters strong camaraderie between residents and faculty. Our preceptors are highly qualified, many with board certification within their specialty area, and passionate about their areas of expertise. Located in beautiful Portland, our program is complemented by all that Maine has to offer. Known nationally as a top foodie town with a vast array of restaurants, there is also a strong cultural presence as well as no shortage of outdoor activities minutes or an easy drive away allowing for a positive work-life balance. Portland has everything you need without all the hassles of a big city to enjoy your time outside of work.
Upon completion of our PGY2 ambulatory care program, residents will have the skills to qualify them for their path of choice whether it is direct patient care, interprofessional teaching, serving the underserved, or impactful research.
During the PGY2 year, residents have the opportunity to rotate at various outpatient clinics. Most clinics are within a 10-mile radius of Portland with some requiring a car to get there. Rotations occur as either a block experience, lasting from 4-8 weeks, or as a longitudinal experience for a longer duration.

- Residents receive guidance on their longitudinal research project from mentor(s) and the Residency Research Committee
- Poster presentation is often encouraged at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition or other national conference
- MHMMC residents have a successful track record of having their project manuscripts being accepted for publication in a peer reviewed journal

- Evaluation of pharmacist- or nurse-driven long-acting insulin titration protocol in adult primary care patients with type 2 diabetes
- Impact of pharmacist-led medication reconciliation and education at an outpatient dialysis center
- Implementation and evaluation of a primary care pharmacist eConsult service
- Pharmacist-led transitions of care service in patients on triple therapy following percutaneous coronary intervention
- Pharmacist-Led Medication Adherence Service in Patients Endorsing Medication Non-Adherence
Our curriculum is deeply rooted in foundational experiences within primary care with many unique opportunities to experience a wide range of specialty areas and clinics. Every year our curriculum is customized to the interests and needs of the resident. The program director and preceptors will work with the resident to optimize and adjust the program and learning experiences. Please refer to our manual for more information on learning experiences.
